Snæfell – Lónsöræfi

Snæfell – Lónsöræfi, Snæfellsskáli - Djúpivogur / Lón, 80 km, 5 days

Snæfell is a big volcano in eastern Iceland (not to be confused with the Snæfellsnes peninsula in the west). With its 1833 m it dominates the surrounding area.

This walk begins with a ride to the western side of the mountain, where there is a hut: Snæfellsskáli. Hence you walk in five days through a wild and desolate landscape to the east coast.

There are three cabins for the first three nights: Geldingafell, Egilssel, Mulaskali. Between the last two cabins extends the impressive Lónsöræfi. The following night you will be camping in the Vididalur Valley. The last day you will reach the coast and civilisation via the Geithellnadalur valley near Stafafell farm not far from Djúpivogur or Höfn.

It pays to plan for an extra night in one of the three cabins to explore the area.
