GR131 Camino Natural de Fuerteventura, Isla de Lobos - Punta Jandía / El Puertito, 155 km, 7 days

When you’re up to an exotic hike, think of Fuerteventura. This is not the island coming in mind first, overshadowed by its spectacular volcanic neighbours like La Palma, La Gomera, Tenerife. The GR131 therefore is a disclosed secret for you.

Fuerteventura is the oldest of the Canary Islands, it has been eroded back to a modest highest point of 800 m. Its dry semi-desert interior is almost treeless but rich in rare birds, animals and exotic plants. Plains and volcanoes alternate. The trail sometimes stays in the valleys where farmers try to make a living, or climb the hills. Once you overcome the surprise that the traditional houses are one storey high whitewashed cubicles, you will love the enchanting villages in the interior. Betancuria is a highlight, especially at dawn. The GR131 starts on the northern tip of the small island Isla de Lobos, where you will find colourful lagoons left and right of the landing pier. The southern part of the trail crosses a white sandy desert while staying away from the tourist resorts along the coast. The tourist fuss along the coast will be avoided with the exceptance of Morro Jable. The lighthouse at the southern tip - Punta Jandía - is magic, as is the nearby villiage of El Puertito.

Winter is the best time for this hike. Vibrant colours and temperatures between 15 - 25 enhance its spell. Don't forget your sun protection. Not all villages in the interior offer accommodation. Study the bus times, because they will enable you to drop on / off the trail every next day if you do not carry a tent.
