Eisenerzer Alpen
Description
The Eisenerzer Alps are situated in the east of Austria, on the line Linz - Graz. The valley of the Enns has carved a deep chasm between the Ennstaler Alps on the north side and Eisenerzer Alps to the south.
This mountain range lies just south of the northern limestone alps. The rock is of a gray-green sedimentary type. The highest peak is the Gösseck (2.214 m). As the name suggests, iron ore is mined, even in our days, and the view of the Erzberg (1.500 m), growing a little bit smaller every day, is a unique sight.
The adjacent Ennstaler Alps and Hochschwab are of a typical calcareous character. Also the mountain range that is called Gesäuse, marking the northern boundary of the Eisenerzer Alps, has the sharp features of limestone. For this reason, the most attractive walks can be found in this part of the area, Gesäuse . The walks are pretty heavy because of the height differences and the steep terrain. Here you'll find the Gesäuse National Park with Hochtor (2.369 m) as its main summit.
