São Jorge, Azores
Description
São Jorge is a middle sized island of the central group of Azores. With its 55 km in length and only 7 km in width, it looks like a razor blade in the ocean. Its coastline has been exposed to the violence of the ocean, resulting in wild, steep cliffs. Only at a some places rockfall or lava created coastal flat grounds, called fajã. These cultivated enclosures are great to explore and often carry a long history with them.
The central ridge is an interesting string of overgrown volcanic forms, craters, lakes, tuff rings, but with paths in places. On clear days one will enjoy the steep volcanic cone of Mount Pico on the nearby island Pico.
Several trails are set out on the island. They explore the different aspects of the island, especially the isolated and interesting coastal plains and villages.
