Huldreheimen
Description
The area between Lillehammer and Jotunheimen, west of Gausdal, is now known as Huldreheimen. But you will find other names as well, like Synnfjellvidda. Long ago, when the railway ended in Lillehammer, people had to travel through the Gausdal to reach Jotunheimen. Nowadays, one can choose to hike from the Gausdal as well. Do not start at Lillehammer, but go by bus to Liomseter hut or Lenningen Fjellstue. Then, it is a five or seven days walk to Gjendesheim, the eastern boundary of Jotunheimen.
You will be walking on a lonely and high plateau, typical of east Norway, with wide views and some mountains to break the monotony of the moors. To enter Jotunheimen after this prelude, is a spectacular change of the landscape. The gently rolling plain gives way to a rugged mountain scenery.
