GR 131 Camino Natural Anaga-Chasna, La Esperanza - Arona, 86 km, 5 days
The trail crosses the island from east to west, climbing the wooded chain dividing the northern and southern part of the island. The third day one reaches the majestic caldera at 2000 m, with its colourful shrubs, flowers and grit. El Teide seems nearby, but is still a climb of 1.800 m.
The GR does not go to the top of this unique stratovolcano, but closely follows the edge of the caldera, offering great views on the plain. It comes near the old Parador (hotel) and then tips over the edge to descend through the dry forests to Vilaflor. The long descend to the west is via attractive trails offering goed vistas. The last part is above the Barranco (ravine) de El Rey.
The trail is easy and there is accommodation available at the end of the days. A drawback of the trail is that it doesn’t climb the volcano and doesn’t go to the old volcano, Pico Viejo. These routes are hard, but it is recommended to include them into your itinerary.
The GR131 is part of the European long distance path E7.
