Description
Home of the (extinct) dodo, the Republic of Mauritius is an island nation in the Indian Ocean, east of Madagascar. It consists of the island of Mauritius, plus the islets of Cargados Carajos, Rodrigues island and finally the two Agalega Islands. Geologically the whole Republic of Mauritius is part of the larger group of Mascarene Islands, originally volcanic.Highest mountain is Black River Peak (or Piton de la Petite Riviere Noire )(828 m) on Mauritius Island.
On the island of Mauritius, the Black River Gorges National Park has some 60 km of marked (hiking) trails open to visitors, for instance along the Macchabee Forest Ridge. Other possibilities for one-day-hikes exist up Le Pouce mountain (811 m), and along the south coast. Nice views and lots of rare bird and plant species.
Rodrigues Island has several Nature Reserves offering good hiking.
