Lough Derg Way, Limerick - Dromineer, 65 km, 3 days
Lough Derg and River Shanon once were important waterways, connecting Limerick to Dublin. The river, canals and other infrastructure is still there. The Lough Derg Way gives you the opportunity to enjoy the monuments of a past era.
Current Lough Derg is a popular tourist destination: fishing is good, different kinds of water sports can be done. Economically, this second largest lake of Ireland is important for hydro electricity and drinking water.
The trail is easy. It starts in Limerick, follows the river Shanon and canals, arrives at the banks of Lough Derg, climbs Tountinna (500 m) from where you can enjoy a great view over the lake and hills beyond, and finishes in the town of Dromineer.
