St. Pauls Trail

Perge (near Antalya) or Aspendos, via Adada to Yalvac, Isparta (north of Lake Egirdir), 500 km

This trail is the initiative of one person, Kate Claw. She lives in Turkey. The St Pauls Way is not the first trail she conceived and realised. The Lycian Way was her first creation. Both trails are a unique chance to experience rural Turkey. They run through a hospitable and colourful countryside, lost in Europe (if you situate Turkey outside Europe, as some people do).

St Paul is believed to have visited this region. This must have been almost 2000 years ago, long before hiking became a cherished pastime. Imagine traveling in his footsteps! Along the 500 km trail you will not find signs of early Christianity, but there are many archeological sites from Greek and Roman times. The trail starts in the surroundings of the popular beach resort Antalya and runs north through the Taurus mountains along the lake of Egirdir and beyond to Yalvaç (Antioch in ancient times: here St. Paul founded a church).

The hospitable people in the villages will offer lodging and food and thanks to the trail and Kate Claw tourists and money flow into the rural economy. Stay attentive to the trail, as waymarking is not too frequent. The locals will help you out. Spring is the best season for this hike.

De afstand bedraagt ruwweg 600 km en het pad is volledig gemarkeerd vanaf 2003 en beschreven. Bovendien wordt... Lire la suite
