Southern Uplands

Description

The sparsely populated southern part of Scotland is located south of the line Edinburgh - Prestwick and north of the English border. In this empty space, quite a few long distance trails are laid out. The most important of them is the Southern Upland Way, traversing the entire distance from coast to coast. The mountains may be not as high as in the Highlands, they are wild and remote nevertheless.

  • Positive A much neglected part of Scotland, usually only travelled through by those heading much further North. An area that has few walkers while containing some very fine routes indeed. While not as rugged and spectacular as the Highlands, the area certainly has its attractions with plenty going on at the major centres. 5 long distance routes exist here, including the only official coast to coast!
  • Negative The area is really the beating heart of the timber industry in Scotland, great if you like conifers! Forestry Commision land however is open to the public and is a great amenity for all oudoor enthusiasts. Much of Southern Scotland, especially in the M74 corridor, is being taken over by wind farms, changing the landscapes for ever. The issue is emotive, but there is a need for green energy.
