Usk Valley

50 miles. 80 km.

he Usk Valley is a fairly onspoilt area in South Wales. The River Usk and the canal parallel to it, run north from Newport at the coast to Brecon. In the west lie the Brecon Beacons, in the east the Black Mountains.

The trail follows the river for a major part, with occasional excursions into the hills, and along the beautiful and restored canal.

The hiker can count on some quiet and rural days.

  • Positive Its a pleasant and gentle walk through farmland, some woodland and along the Monmouthshire and Brecon canal with some pretty towns on route such as Usk, Abergavenny and Brecon, great for lunch or coffee. Its improved by starting from Newport at the Wales Coast path on the recently waymarked Usk Valley Link as this adds some history such as the Transporter bridge and the Roman remains at Caerleon.
  • Negative Some of the deviations up the hillside beside the valley were poorly waymarked and overgrown. They added some sweeping views across the valley, but one suspects the landowners were not all in favour of the path.
